Cushions & Fabric

The yardage required for a swivel rocker cushion is as follows:

  • Solid Color: Fabric and overall print is 2.5 yards. The direction of print not defined in any particular direction.
  • Stripe Fabric: 3.5 yards.
  • Floral Fabric or one directional print (such as tree, boat, fish, animal, people or any print that does not look like overall print): is 3.5 yards. In other words, if all the figures on the print are in one direction and when the fabric is wrapped around the cushion the fabric will look upside down when turned over, then more yardage is required. You must consider the fabric repeat pattern and matching to reverse the image when the cushion is made made so that when it is turned over to use the other side it does not look upside down.

Note: This is based on a standard 54 inch width fabric where one yard is 36 in. x 54 in.

When new, a one tuft chair cushion is about five inches thick and very soft and puffy. It will eventually flatten down a bit to about three to three-and-a-half inches. A four tuft chair cushion when new is between three and four inches thick depending on the size of the seat cushion and pretty much stays that way. A four tuft chair cushion is slightly more firm than a single tuft chair cushion. The four tuft chair cushion may flatten out about a half inch over time. But the four tuft cushions will hold their shape longer than a one tuft cushion.

Natural wicker and resin wicker are your two choices. Resin wicker can be used indoors or outdoors. Natural wicker should only be used where the outdoor elements won’t bother it too much. For a covered porch, you should be able to use natural or resin wicker providing your furniture stays protected, particularly from rain and humidity.

  • Using resin wicker, you will never have to worry about the finish or materials deteriorating and you’ll have little or no maintenance
  • With natural wicker you will have deterioration of the finish and materials over time and you will probably have to re-glue, re-nail and re-paint form time to time.
  • We wrote an article called Choosing the Right Wicker Furniture that digs into this topic a little deeper if you’re interested.

Wicker is something that is woven such as a basket, chair or cabinet. So, if it’s woven, it’s wicker. It does not matter what the material is made from, as long as it woven. Learn more by reading our article All About Wicker

You should consider the situation in which you will be using your furniture. Whether you are entertaining, dining or simply realizing, the layout plays an important role in a successful implementation. Read our article on Arranging Patio Furniture Is Situational to get a better idea of how to more forward depending on the situation.

Natural wicker is made of natural vegetation products such as reeds, rattan, palm, vines, willow or grasses. Sometimes materials such as rattan, steel or wood are used for wicker furniture frames. The wicker material is grown, harvested, dried and later hand crafted into wicker furniture, baskets, lamps, rugs, trunks, hampers, planters, carpers and other home décor products. Check out our blog article “All About Wicker” to learn more.

Rattan furniture is made from the rattan vine. It grows very long and can be bent and formed into very strong elegant furniture. It is commonly known as pole furniture. To learn more details, read our article “Learn About Rattan Furniture“.

From more than a few feet away, it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between natural wicker and outdoor all-weather resin wicker. Close inspection reveals the answer. Natural wicker can be made from a variety of natural vegetation products such as reed, rattan, palm vine or grasses. The texture is typically somewhat rough unless painted in which case it is smooth. Natural wicker is typically finished with stains, paints and other coloring and sealing materials. Natural wicker is also available in its natural state without any outer paints or stains.

Outdoor all-weather resin wicker is manufactured from a man made material called resin which resembles a plastic. The resin contains color pigments through out and has no paint, stain or outer covering. However, it is a special resin that is designed to inhibit adverse weather and moisture condition. Resin wicker is typically smooth as compared to natural wicker. At close look, it resembles a smooth plastic material rather than that of a natural woody product. But don’t jump to conclusions about it not being a high quality product because it is made from resin. It is by far the most desirable elegant superior outdoor furniture available on the market.

Care must be taken in choosing the right type of furniture for your situation. In as much as you can always use all-weather resin wicker outdoors or indoors, its not always advisable to do the opposite with natural wicker. Natural wicker products can withstand a certain amount of outdoor abuse by weather conditions, until they begin to degrade. Using natural wicker outdoors will require annual maintenance to ensure that it lasts. We recommend reading the article Choosing the Right Furniture on our blog for things you should consider when evaluating what type of furniture you want to buy and use.

Wicker furniture has been around since ancient times. Except for using some modern materials to make wicker furniture last longer outside, the designs have not really changed much. Learn more by reading our article on the “History of Wicker From Egypt to 2013”
